Mojave, CA The group who sponsored the Ansari
X-Prize shocked developers of the successful SpaceShipOne
craft with the revelation the prize money was actually 10
million "doll-hairs."
"I'm sorry but this was just a little joke that apparently
got a bit out of hand," said X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis.
"Seriously, where would we get 10 million bucks? I thought
you guys knew I was bluffing."
Diamandis and the rest of the group sponsoring the first
privately funded trip to outer space
expressed remorse for anyone who might have been inconvenienced
but explained they never thought anyone would actually succeed
-- and they merely used the old "doll-hair" line
just in case.
Burt Rutan and his company, Scaled Composites, who spent
millions on the design that would eventually win the X-Prize
on Monday, tried to appear gracious as they accepted 10 million
actual doll-hairs, donated at the last minute by Barbie maker
Mattel and several other local doll manufacturers.
"Sure, I mean it's not quite as good as $10 million,"
Rutan said. "But the bright side is we actually got a
man in space and nobody got killed"
"Until now," Rutan said as he pulled out a pistol
and shot Diamandis to the delight of the cheering crowd.
