JORDAN The holy month of Ramadan, best
known for fasting, all day prayer sessions and repetitive,
angry calls for Jihad, was livened up Friday by the introduction
of the toy dreidel.
"We were told that most Jewish kids hate the toy dreidel,"
Jordanian party planner Ali Al-Assan said. "And since
we hate the Jews, why not steal it just like they stole the
falafel sandwich -- and that whole land thing."
The dreidel, a spinning top with Hebrew letters, was once
the delight of Jewish children all over the world. Increasingly,
the Arab world has discovered the never-ending fun associated
with a cheap wooden toy with rules nobody seems to understand.
"We first tried to liven up the Ramadan festivities
by screaming for Jihad and firing our weapons into the air,
but the kids got restless since we always do that," Al-Assan
said. "Then we watched the new documentary, 'The Great
Satan And the Toys They Play With." The dreidel just
caught on like wildfire after that. It's like the hula hoop
around here."
Several well-known Jewish comics also participated in the
Ramadan festivities when it became clear they couldn't find
any funny Muslims. According to sources, the Arabs really
seemed to enjoy the comedy stylings of Jewish ventriloquist
Shecky Goldberg.
"It's so hard to get participation when you don't have
solid entertainment," Al-Assan admitted. Last year we
tried to liven up the party by using a Mexican style piñata,
but when kids are used to beating a real person with a stick,
the piñata is just a huge letdown."
