Denver, CO - Temp worker Sandra Houston has an incredibly
false sense of belonging, according to several permanent employees
and supervisors at Modoc International where she has worked
for the past three weeks.
Houston, 31, took the job through First Office Staffing in
an attempt to get back into the workforce and build up her
resume since getting a divorce. She is excited by how warmly
she feels she has been welcomed and how many new friends she
falsely expects to make at work.
Not only has temping allowed me to build up some skills,
but since being staffed at Modoc I am really connecting with
a lot of my new coworkers, Houston said. Everybody
here is so nice, and I think I'm doing really well with the
work they've given me. I feel like there is definitely a bright
future for me here at Modoc.
Coworkers have no idea what she's talking about.
I eat in the cafeteria with somebody new almost every
day, it seems like everyone wants a chance to sit with me
and get to know me," Houston said. "And I am working
so hard, I feel that Im really developing a solid skill
set and becoming invaluable to [Secretarial Staffing Manager]
Helen [Carter].
Despite Houstons conviction, she is universally mocked
during company meetings and staff members bet on how fast
they can make her cry.
"My first week there, they actually learned it was my
birthday and brought out a cake," Houston recalled. "I
started crying I was so touched by the thoughtfulness. Then
everyone sang 'Happy Birthday' even though they skipped the
part with my name. But I'm sure that will change next year!"
According to immediate supervisor Henry Akin, Houston has
brought to the company a skill set that includes separating
paperclips into three sizes and lining the wastepaper basket,
and even that was done incorrectly.
"The new fat girl will be fired the second Debby Konkle
returns from maternity leave," Akin said during a staff
meeting. "And don't forget to deduct the cost of the
birthday cake from her final paycheck."
