Cambridge, MA -- Engineering student Ted Gersky decided
to take it slower with his hologram girlfriend of 3 months
when it became obvious that neither were sure they were ready
to commit.
"It became really apparent that we were just in different
places after a couple of months," Gersky said. "I
felt like she really wanted a commitment and I'm just not
ready to head in that direction so quickly."
Gersky, who created "Lady Butterfly" last year
as part of a summer internship at an optical research laboratory,
never felt their relationship would ever progress past the
friendship level, despite feelings that would surface late
at night when they were together alone.
"Sure, I tried to lead the conversation there several
times. But every time, I was rejected out of hand," Gersky
said. "She acted in such a way that could easily be misconstrued
as flirting but then she would always take it back moments
later. It was frustrating obviously."
Both assumed the relationship was over when Gersky went back
to school during the fall semester, but, as Gersky remembers,
they just couldn't stop thinking about each other.
"Even though we didn't see each other, I could sense
she was lonely. Obviously it was difficult if not impossible
to speak on the phone, so I came out to visit her and we discussed
it -- well, I discussed it. She was a bit shy, mostly
just smiling, nodding and looking as radiant as ever."
After several cross country visits, Gersky finally poured
his guts out. They've been together ever since.
"Now we're at that scary three month
point where we need to decide if we want to go further or
you know, go our separate ways," Gersky said. "I
guess I got a little afraid since everything was so perfect
and happening so fast. I think slowing things down will give
us both time to reflect -- plus we're both just super busy."
"In the end, I think we'll end up together
if that's what she wants," Gersky admits. "Of course,
I could just reprogram her to fall in love with me, but that's
cheating -- I really want it to happen naturally."
