During an emergency session held Saturday, the Brookine
High School Model U.N. Club, concerned about the increased
violence in the Mideast, passed a resolution demanding Israel
immediately withdraw from the Palestinian territories.
In a statement read by Model U.N Secretary
General Tabitha Kramer, 16, the resolution, which called for
an immediate cessation of Israel's military offensive in the
West Bank, was unanimously passed by "all those delegates
who got off their butts and showed up at my house this morning."
As of Sunday morning, Israeli incursions into
the West Bank have only intensified, leading the members of
the Brookline Model U.N. frustrated at the obvious snubbing
by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"We've made our position clear and even
sent a telegram to the Israeli U.N. delegation which has gone
unanswered at this time," Kramer said as she passed out
lemonade and homemade brownies to the other delegates. "We
demand that Israel immediately withdraw from the occupied
territories and ask that Chairman Arafat denounce terrorism
in the strongest of words and do everything in his power to
stop the bloodshed."
The Model U.N. club used especially harsh
language in its one page resolution, calling Israel's continued
military action "unacceptable, a clear violation of international
law, and very very mean."
Several members threatened economic or political
sanctions if their demands remain unanswered by the end of
band practice Tuesday.
